Garth Hill College Careers Programme
We use benchmarks to support our career guidance. The eight Gatsby Benchmarks define an ambitious framework for career guidance that works for schools, employers and, most importantly, young people and their families. We have an Enterprise Advisor, Ian Howells from Honda, who assists us in developing our initiatives. Our careers programme is reviewed annually, the next review is, November 2018.
Careers Resources in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC)
- Information on post 16 options including full time education, apprenticeships and training.
- Prospectuses for local sixth forms and further education colleges and contact details for training providers.
- Information about Higher Education.
Carrers Resources On-line at the College
- The National Careers Service. On-line through https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/Pages/Homes.aspx On the phone 0800 100 900.
- See the list of websites indicated at the end of this section for use at home.
- If any pupil has problems accessing any of the websites at home, they are welcome to ask for help in using them at school in the LRC.
- Years 10 and 12 pupils have the opportunity to spend a week on work experience.
- The Year 10 process includes a skills review, application form, external interview and a week placement.
- Once a placement has been approved, consent and health forms will be issued for completion by parents and carers.
- Students will need to make contact with their placements before the start of work experience to check hours of work, dress code, lunch arrangements, etc.
- Students will be briefed at the start of the process and at strategic points throughout.
- Pupils will either be visited during work experience or a phone call will be made to their place of work to check that the placement is running smoothly.
Further Information for all Year Groups:
These are given by representatives from colleges and companies and aim to inform on the work, opportunities, training and routes into a variety of careers. They are advertised to pupils in advance.
These located in the LRC and LRA, they should be looked by all pupils. Information on training opportunities, open days and other events is advertised on them.

Regular career updates are posted in the school's weekly newsletter and include information on; apprenticeships, forthcoming events, open days, qualifications and post 16 options and opportunities. Timely letters are also sent parents and carers throughout the year.
GARTH HILL COLLEGE PROVIDER ACCESS POLICY STATEMENT
This policy statement sets out the school's arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider's education or training offer. this complies with the school's legal obligation under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.
Garth Hill College recognises that all pupils in years 8-13 are entitled:
- to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point:
- to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships - through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events; and
- to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

Opportunities for access
A number of events integrated into the school careers programme will offer providers of education or training an opportunity to come into school to speak to students and/or their parents/carers. Providers should speak to the contact named above to identify the most suitable opportunity for access to Garth Hill College students.
Premises and facilities
The school will aim to make suitable facilities avaliable for discussions between the provider and students, as appropriate to the activity and subject to the school's own calender of events. The school will also make avaliable AV and the other specialist equipment to support provider presentations. This will all be discussed and agreed in advance of the visit with the Careers Lead
Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature at the Careers Library, which is managed by the LRC manager. The Careers Library is avaliable to all students at lunch and break times.
